Challenge of the GoBots is an American animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera, based on the Gobots toy-line released from Tonka. The show originally debuted in animated form as a five-part miniseries, which aired in syndication from October 29 - November 2, 1984. A regular series followed the next year, premiering on September 16, 1985 as part of the new weekday/weekend morning programming block called The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera. The series was later rerun on the USA Cartoon Express.

Mumm-Ra hires Captain Shiner no send a fake distress signal to the Thundercats. With their new vehicle, the Feliner, the Thundercats set out into deep space to help the "ship in distress". When they arrive, Shiner captures Lion-O and the Sword of Omens. He gives the Sword to Mumm-Ra, and Mumm-Ra throws it into a black hole. Cheetara returns to Third Earth to get Panthro. They rescue Lion-O, and seize Shiner's ship. Panthro sets a course into the black hole to recover the Sword. They enter, and must battle the robotic city of lost space ships to recover the Sword of Omens and escape.

Zarkon oversees the wedding of Lotor and Merla. He sees the wedding as the way to unite their two evil kingdoms. Meanwhile on Planet Arus, a young woman named Taryn pines away for her lost love, Ro, who was taken as a slave to Planet Doom. Ro shows up with two mystery women, Merla and Haggar in disguise. Merla claims to have a crush on Keith, and in exchange for bringing Ro home, she wants Taryn to deliver a jar of fresh honey to the castle as a present for his birthday. Taryn gives the jar to Allura, who ponders her own feelings for Keith. After Taryn returns, Ro reveals that the jar actually contains poison. Now they have to get to the castle and warn the Voltron Force before any of them drink it.

When the Hazards visit Mont Royal, Billy loses interest in Ashton when he sees her with another man, turning his interests to Brett. Virgilia meets James Hontoon's coachman Grady and forms an instant attraction to him. After spending the night together, she helps him run away to the North, which leads to a confrontation with Huntoon. Orry feels he has little choice but to ask the Hazards to leave. Virgilia and Grady are soon living together as husband and wife but that makes even some of the most ardent supporters of abolition uncomfortable. Billy and Charles graduate from West Point with Billy assigned to go to Washington, D.C. and Charles sent to Texas under the command of Robert E. Lee. Billy proposes to Brett, but Orry will not allow him to court her. Ashton continues to scheme her way through society and turns to Madeline when she gets into trouble. Meanwhile, Madeline's father is on his deathbed and shocks her by revealing a hidden family secret.

Cobra makes a generous donation to the Joes' toy drive: a battalion of Cobra troops, miniaturized to look like toys. Once inside Joe Headquarters, the Cobra forces sabotage the defenses, open the gates, and let the rest of the Cobra forces inside. The Joes have to use Cobra's vehicles to stop Cobra's attack on the city using the Joe's own vehicles.

Merla uses her telepathic powers to make Zarkon place her in charge of the next mission to attack Planet Arus. Meanwhile on Arus, word has been spreading that King Alfor is preparing to return from the grave. Some townspeople find a cave that has a statue with a golden shield that is believed to have belonged to Alfor. Allura, wanting to believe that her father has returned, heads for the cave with her teammates right behind her. It turns out to be a trap. The guys get trapped in the cave, and Allura gets taken prisoner by Merla.
