Caroline in the City
Season 2, Episode 1
Three months have passed, and Caroline is thinking about advertising for a new assistant, so Charlie tries to demonstrate he would be perfect for the job and knocks Salty out the window. Sparks fly between Caroline and the vet who treats Salty, despite her fears that at 24 he is much too young for her. Meanwhile Richard, having failed as an artist in Paris (his only customer is knocked into the Seine just before buying some paintings), returns to New York and is forced to take a menial job in an ice cream parlor, where he just misses seeing Caroline on her first date with Joe, during which they helped raid an animal experimental laboratory and were arrested. (One of the participants is Shelly, still wistful about Richard, in her final appearance to date.) Caroline wakes up in bed with Joe and is unable to sneak out before he wakes and demands to see her again that evening, and on her way home she and Richard suddenly meet face to face.

Tool Time goes to sea in another on-location shoot, with Tim, Al and Heidi boarding the USS Constellation aircraft carrier as part of their salute to engines.

Michael finds Kimberly, who explains that she cannot remember the night of Bobby's murder. Peter is injured after picking a fight with a prison guard. Alison decides to move out of the building so that she and Jake can have time alone. Matt steals Michael's prescription pad to get access to more pills. Taylor convinces Kyle that they should buy a restaurant in Los Angeles.

For a health class project, Mr. Belding pairs up the boys and girls and gives each one a computer chip-controlled baby to take care of for a week. Ryan is happy to be paired with Rachel. He wants to tell her how much he likes her, but the crying baby keeps ruining his attempts. Nicky and Maria are totally negligent as ""parents."" Nicky wants to hold a New York coffeehouse night at the Max and Maria wants to sing there. Both of them want to pursue their interests while neither wants to bother with the baby. Katie and Eric are parents together. Eric is a good father, having helped raise so many siblings, but when the baby runs a fever while in Katie's care, he thinks she can't take good care of the child. At the ""coffeehouse"" night at the Max, all three couples get in big fights and all the yelling and crying babies ruin Maria's song and they drive away the audience. Mr. Belding tells them if they don't improve as parents in the next three days they will all fail the assignment. Everyone
